Answer (1 of 5): First. There is no Android that doesn't exist (yet, at least). Second, I'd say you have not missed anything: If your Nexus 5 is unmodified (rooted, custom recovery) then go to Settings, About phone and check for system updates. Unless it is a N5 somehow locked by some cell. This software update will upgrade your Nexus 5 to Android , which improves performance and stability and fixes bugs. Downloading updates over a mobile network or while roaming may cause additional charges. I own an Android phone (a Nexus 5, so it's "standard" Android) and use it with a very limited data plan. Sometimes it downloads huge updates over the mobile network, even though it's at home and could use our Wi-Fi. I haven't caught it in the act, so I don't know if the updates are for the operating system itself or the apps.

The current software version for the Nexus 5 is M4B30Z. Scroll down and view the current Build number. Fully charge the battery. Save any important data before updating the software on your device. Any data not saved may be erased; i.e. contacts, images, etc. To backup your data, connect your phone to a PC via the USB cable. Unless it is a N5 somehow locked by some cell phone company, you should get the Android or updates (or both, older first.) If your phone is rooted or modified someway, you can go to the Google site, (link below) download the stock firmware image of your choice, flash it to the Nexus 5 and voila!!!. These files are for use only on your personal Nexus or Pixel devices and may not be disassembled, decompiled, reverse engineered, modified or redistributed by you or used in any way except as specifically set forth in the license terms that came with your device.
